At 19,341 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent and the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones, Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. The mountain has five main vegetation zones from the lowest to the highest point: Lower slopes, mountain forest, heath and moorland, alpine desert and summit.

Pick your Route

Known as the "Coca-Cola" route, the Marangu route is the oldest, most well established route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Due to its gradual slope, the Marangu route is considered the easiest path on the mountain. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations. This is one of the reasons this route is favored during the rainy season. Marangu route is also considered the busiest route due to the ascent and descent being done on the same path. This makes for a crowded path at times.

The Machame route, the most popular on Kilimanjaro, is also known as the "Whiskey" route. Machame’s draw is in its scenic beauty. However, the trail is considered difficult, steep and challenging, better suited to the slightly more adventurous hiker. Machame has a rewarding scenic splendor, sights you do not see on the Marangu route.

The recommended duration of this trip is seven days. The Umbwe route is a steep, spectacular and challenging route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Although the number of people on this trail is very low, the chances of success are also low. Umbwe route is one that should only be attempted by strong hikers who are confident in their ability to acclimatize quickly to altitude.

The Lemosho route begins on the West side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Although becoming more popular due to its high success rate, it still has less foot traffic than the other routes. The Lemosho route is a lengthy yet gentle trail that offers both exceptional chances of seeing wildlife and a higher than average chance of reaching the summit.

Shira route is almost identical to the Lemosha route, but starts at a higher elevation. Starting at a higher elevation, it is possible for most climbers experience altitude sickness on the first day. This route is better suited to the slightly more adventures hiker, however rewarding with scenic beauty that is not seen on the Marangu route.

The Rongai route, close to the Kenyan border is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the North. Being a low traffic route, it has gained popularity for those looking for a less crowded path, unlike the Marangu route. If you are not experienced in backpacking, this route is recommended.
